New Guy Says Three Calm Words While Sergeant Waves A Log He Shredded
"You misfiled my whole log, new guy," Sergeant Baskin said, and half a bucket of grey wash water came off his hand across Tobias Kern's chest.
Kern had been in the motor pool four days. A line of wet cloth down clean coveralls is nothing next to what a bad first week does to a man's file — and on the hardstand, Baskin writes the file.
Kern looked down at the stripe, brushed it once with the back of two fingers, and said nothing at all. That was the part the shop noticed.
Hollis Pynes, the small supply clerk Baskin had been picking on all week, typed at the orderly desk with his elbows gone thin, and stopped every time Baskin walked past. Nobody asked why. Nobody asked anything.
But Baskin wasn't finished. He put Kern on the quarterly duty log — hand-copy it, re-file it, by close of business — a job meant to end a man's first week. Kern went to the shelf. The log wasn't there.
It was in the shred bin.
Kern carries a small blacklight on a black pen clip. Under it, in the margin of one page, a handwritten 138 complaint tracking number glowed violet — and bottom-right, in the same ink, two initials: E.B.
The wall duty board behind Pynes has a clean gap of staples in the middle of the schedule. Kern looked at the shred bin, then at that gap, and closed the page inside a worn grey folder.
First Sergeant Odell Marsh walked in at the end of dispatch with the tool-cage key still swinging on his orange lanyard. Baskin rushed over to charm him — and repeated his accusation against Kern, loud, in front of the whole shop.
Kern opened the folder, held the page under the blacklight, and read the tracking number out loud.
Marsh made Baskin say his accusation a second time. Then he took the page and asked Kern one quiet question about the rest of the file.
That is where the blog picks it up — because a tracking number is not the whole story, and the rest of that file goes a lot further than one duty roster. The climate assessment, the dates, the transfers, and what Baskin said when the orderly room door closed: all of it is below.
