They Flicked Cold Coffee Down the Quiet Man at the CQ Desk — Then He Read the Margin of a 2016 Page Aloud
"Who let the courier sit at my desk?" — and the cold coffee went down the front of the charcoal suit before anyone answered.
Dane Corrigan only came in to sign for a building. Sergeant First Class Rick Mowbray had other plans for the morning, and a room that laughs on cue.
The wet lapel, the paper cup still in Mowbray's fist, the folder already open at the head of the table. Corrigan brushes the coffee off once and says nothing.
Then Mowbray brags: the old roster trick still works on new soldiers here.
Corrigan turns the folder toward the lawyer. It is a yellow carbon copy, dated 2016 — one weekend duty line erased and retyped, three initials in the margin.
The room hears the name. Mowbray's own initials sit right beside the line that sent a specialist home in disgrace eight years ago.
The duty roster board comes off the wall behind him.
