She Was Scrubbing Blue Frosting Off the Marble When Her Husband Walked In Early
"You'll clean every crumb before he walks in."
That was the rule. His wife was on her knees, sponge in hand, seven months pregnant, scrubbing a crushed cake off the marble.
He came home early for his birthday and got this instead.
His mother stood over her with folded arms. Nobody said a word.
Then he knelt and saw the raw red marks ringed around his wife's wrists.
The frosting line was still half-readable on the floor — but it wasn't a birthday message. Under it, the start of something else, already smeared into the grout.
The housemaid had watched the whole thing from the kitchen doorway. She kept her eyes down, waiting to be asked.
He asked.
"She broke it. Then made her kneel."
And that was when he understood what the cake had been for.
What he said next, his mother never saw coming.
