The New CQ Runner Took the Coffee Without a Word — Then the Sergeant Major Opened the Drawer
Specialist Corbin tips a full mug of hot coffee down the new guy's starched shirt in the middle of a crowded duty room.
Private First Class Nolan Beck wiped the stain with one slow thumb and said nothing. He's two weeks into being the new CQ runner, and he has mailed nothing home yet; he knows one report can travel faster than money can.
The room laughed because Corbin has run the duty roster for two years and initials every appointment packet himself. He told Nolan the packet was filler and that nothing in it mattered.
Nolan waited for Sergeant Major Ida Presley in the doorway and didn't raise his voice once — even after Corbin promised to strike him from the next duty cycle.
The phone came up at 0730. A still frame: Corbin's own right hand mid-initial on the appointment roster page, his face turned toward the camera in the same fluorescent light, the duty room clock behind him reading 0628, his left hand flat on the paper. Ten days ago. He never read what he signed.
Presley opened the locked drawer, slid the appointment order across the desk and told Corbin to read his own initials aloud.
Corbin read them. The room went quiet. That's where it ends.
What happens to Corbin's name on the duty roster the next morning — and do the sealed complaints in Nolan's bag finally get opened? The full IG review, the relief of duties and the three complaints that got a tracking number are in the link below.
