He Flicked Diesel Over the New Motor Sergeant's Boots — Then the Shop Tablet Turned Around
"Nice boots. Complaints don't survive this shop."
Nobody had briefed Odell Levin on Senior Specialist Peak's Friday ritual: the diesel can left open on the green Formica counter, the formation-release crowd still in the doorway, and Peak's hand flicking a sheet of fuel across whoever looks newest. The shop laughed. Angelica Cross laughed first, then checked who else was laughing. Corporal Ruiz kept his eyes on the parts-cage key around his neck.
Levin wore no rank patch, and that was the point. He looked down at the amber runnel sliding off his clean olive shirt, brushed it off slowly, and said nothing. What he stood to lose was not the shirt — it was the audit he'd carried in from the state IG's office six weeks ago, the one with Peak's initials already flagged. Peak, in exchange, was betting everything on a room that looked the other way.
Behind Peak the shredder hummed inside the parts cage, and he made sure to mention it. "Complaints don't survive this shop," he barked, then promised the newcomer a Friday duty roster. Ruiz kept his hand flat on the counter the whole time.
The shop tablet had been sitting on that counter since before formation, already awake, its lens aimed straight at the counter corner. Nobody had asked who switched it on. Nobody had asked why it was pointed at the roster.
Levin finally turned and spoke one even line to Ruiz. The clerk lifted the tablet, and the screen held one still photo: Peak's own smirk lit sideways, his right hand wrapped around a roster page, his left pressing it flat, and the missing 138's tracking number already inked across the top in his blocky handwriting.
Peak reached back and found only the wire wall behind him. The clipboard went down. Nobody in the shop said a word for him.
Levin opened the green folder on the counter. The second sheet had a number printed at the top — and frost went through the room.
What number is on that second sheet, and what happens to Peak's senior enlisted shield once the state opens its own file? Part 2 below has the full complaint chain, Peak's own reprimand, and the paper that ends his run in this shop for good.
