He Came Home Early and Found His Wife Screaming at His Sick Mother
"She attacked me!" Renata screamed, arm still swung out over the shattered glass, orange juice spreading across the rug.
Daniel had been gone three weeks. His mother, Eleanor, was seventy-four and frail, and he had trusted his wife to keep her safe.
The glass lay between them. Nobody had moved to help. And Eleanor was pressed into the pillows with both hands raised, shaking.
Dorcas, the live-in caregiver, stayed planted between Renata and the bed. She didn't raise her voice. She said Eleanor had been made to drink it.
Renata laughed. "It was orange juice." Then she laughed again, sharper, and told Daniel he was overreacting to spilled breakfast.
Daniel set down his duffel bag and pulled out his phone. Weeks ago, before the first trip, he had mounted a small camera in the kitchen soffit. He had never told anyone.
The first clips were small things. Renata insulting Eleanor under her breath. Renata slipping the phone off the nightstand and into her pocket. A morning pill cup still full at noon.
The last clip was two days old. Renata alone at the counter. A glass of orange juice in her left hand. Her right hand coming out of her slacks pocket, fingers pinched around something small.
He held the screen up where she could see it. Her hand went to her mouth.
Then he opened the message on her phone, sent minutes before he walked in. It promised her the house once Eleanor was gone.
The lawyer's office confirmed the rest, and that was when Renata went quiet — because the new estate papers didn't have her name on them at all.
