The CQ Runner Wiped Gravy Off His Chest — Then the Monitor Named the Sergeant
"Tastes better on you, cage ghost." — Sergeant Marlow hooked Delroy's canteen cup off the tray rail and snapped his wrist, and brown gravy arced across the fresh OCP top in front of the whole chow line.
Delroy Nunes had been the new CQ runner for nine days. He kept the binder straight, he never touched his own phone on duty, and he had one week left to show he could keep his temper in a room full of rank.
Sergeant Deke Marlow ran the supply cage. Junior soldiers said gear walked out of that cage with a signature that wasn't theirs, and the loss statements were always filed before anyone noticed the gear was gone.
Marlow held the empty cup above his head like a trophy and laughed at his own line. Delroy looked down at the stain, brushed a drop off his name tape with two fingers, breathed out, and said just one flat sentence before he walked back to the CQ desk.
He didn't wipe the stain off. He finished his shift with it drying on his chest.
At 1732, the CQ log showed a camera file checked out under Delroy's name. Nobody explained who put it there.
Delroy asked First Sergeant Pruitt for one minute in front of the monitor, with Marlow in the room. He didn't ask loudly. He didn't ask twice.
Pruitt opened the file. The timestamp read 1712. The room in the frame was the same chow hall, the same cream tile, the same glass serving line. The hand tipping the cup was Marlow's own.
The camera that shot it had been clipped to Marlow's chest. No one had to say whose chest it was — his sergeant patch was in the corner of the frame, and his mouth was open mid-shout.
Marlow had handed the file over himself. He always bragged about "having eyes everywhere."
Pruitt's hand went flat on the desk. Marlow's tray clattered off the table, and he took one step back into the drink cooler.
The still stays on the screen, the timestamp stays in the corner, and nobody in that room has said why Delroy's name was on the checkout line.
